Australia's Pink Lakes
Australia is home to several unbelievable Pink Lakes, from the outback of South Australia to the coast of Western Australia. These are the most attractive ones: Lake Hillier, near Esperance, WA; Hutt Lagoon, Coral Coast, WA; Lake Eyre, Outback, SA; Lake Bumbunga, near Clare Valley, SA; Lake Macdonnell Eyre Peninsula, SA; Lake Hart, Woomera, SA; Pink Lake & Lake Warden, WA; Quairading Pink Lake, WA; Lake Albert, Fleurieu Peninsula, SA; The Pink Lakes, near Mildura, Vic.
The pink colour is a natural phenomenon, the result of the mix of algae and saltwater. The lakes, however, don't remain pink all the time, at least most of them. Their colour change frequently during the day and at different times of the year. Therefore, the less water, the more salt amount and the brighter the pink colour.
Lake Hillier, Australia's most famous pink lake, is located on Middle Island. The only way to reach it is via a scenic flight or boat trip. The Pink Lake is an eight-hour drive or around two-hour flight from Perth.
This Pink Lake was discovered in 1802 by the navigator Matthew Flinders, who took samples of the lake and recorded its existence in his diary as "a small pink lake". In fact, it remains quite small, its length is 600 meters and its width is approximately 250 meters. What makes the lake and the landscape more beautiful is the fact that it is surrounded by eucalyptus, pocket trees and the Pacific Ocean.
Although historically the water in this Lake was visibly pink, it hasn't been pink for over 10 years. According to specialists, the pink hue was generated by microscopic algae producing beta carotene which diminished as the salt levels fell, caused mainly by floods. Salt harvesting at the lake also ended in 2007. Thus, it may turn pink again if the salt concentration changes, as this is fundamental to the pink tone of the lake.
The water of Hillier Lake is clear and harmless to the human skin. Swimming in the lake’s water, however, can’t be practised due to the potential impact it would cause to nature preservation.
