Online Job Interview - Are you Ready?
In a pandemic context, several activities had to be readapted to respect social isolation. Among them, the recruitment selective processes. In this scenario, the online job interview proved to be an excellent solution for companies.
The modality was already a trend even before Covid-19, but it was intensified since then. In practice, the online interview works the same as the face-to-face interview, which can be due by meeting apps like Zoom, or through recorded videos.
More and more companies are choosing to do the recruitment and selection process online. This online process can be challenging for both recruiters and candidates, who must take the online stages with the same seriousness and commitment as the on-site stages. Therefore, preparing correctly will directly impact the result. If you want to stand out in the selection processes, check out some tips that can help your performance:
1. Research about the company
Search for information about the company and the vacancy which you are applying for. The official website and social networks are enough to have a reference to the organizational culture and what to expect in the interview. This makes the conversation more fluid and will show the recruiter that you took the initiative to research.
2. Test all the technology before starting
Test your connection, camera, lighting, sound and video platform. Make sure you understand how it all works.
3. Select a proper location
The ideal scenario for your interview location is a secluded room in which you can shut out distractions, control the lighting, and display a generic background. Be sure to be in a quiet location and do not be sitting on your bed as it gives a poor impression.
4. Dress professionally
Dress up like you would for a face-to-face interview. Even if you are sitting down, wear nice pants and shoes as you never know when you will have to stand up. A suit jacket and solid shirt or blouse work best. Avoid prints or plaids as these don't look good when viewed via a monitor.
5. Look directly into the Camera
You might be tempted to look at the monitor or yourself but focus on making eye contact with your interviewer via the camera. It shows that you are confident.
6. Have a piece of paper and a pen ready
You can mark information about the position, the company or even other stages of the selection process. Have a copy of your resume in your sightline in case you must refer to dates, job titles, or numbers.
7. Take care of your marketing
As much as in the face-to-face interview, the recruiter expects you to talk about your skills and your main results. So, it's good to have that memorized. The recruiter also hopes to see confidence and desire in the eyes, even if through the camera.
If you're uncomfortable with the technology or how you look/sound on camera, the best you can do is practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the better you'll get with not only online conferencing technology but the art of interviewing, too!
8. Avoid distractions
For you to perform well in the online interview, concentration is essential. For this reason, one of the tips is to look for an environment that is not the passage of other people and that doesn't have much noise.
In addition, regardless of the location chosen, it is important to turn off any device that might distract you, even if the interview is only by phone call or recorded video. Cell phones, computers and other devices should be kept out of your sight. Even on the device used, it is worth closing tabs or other applications that can send notifications during the evaluation.
